Malina Reward

No one will argue that raspberries - the berry is not only tasty, but also very useful. A rare household plot in Russia goes without raspberries, but they grow mostly unknown varieties, from which they harvest one crop from a bush and rejoice in it. On the other hand, many gardeners who decide to make money on growing and selling this valuable berry, carefully consider the task of selecting the right variety and often choose large-fruited and remontant varieties of raspberries, which are distinguished by considerable yield, but require careful and thoughtful ongoing care.

At the moment, the range of such varieties is so wide that the problem of choice seems to be really serious. But after all, the old raspberry varieties still exist, which are somewhat inferior to the novelties, possess unpretentiousness, stability and at the same time delicious taste, to which sometimes many and many modern large and fruitful raspberries.

A typical example of such a variety is the raspberry Reward, a description of which with photos and reviews of gardeners you will find in the article.

History of

Malina The award was received in the early 70s of the last century by a group of breeders working under the guidance of N.P. Grain in the Botanical Garden of Nizhny Novgorod State University. It arose as a result of crossing varieties Lloyd George and Kolkhoznitsa and at that time created such a sensation among farmers with its characteristics that the author was even awarded the silver medal of the Exhibition of Economic Achievements, and his assistants with bronze medals and gifts. So raspberry has received the name Reward at all not casually and quite deservedly.

Attention! In 1973, this raspberry variety was already included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements and was recommended for cultivation throughout almost the entire territory of Russia, excluding only Eastern Siberia and the Far East.

Indeed, the Raspberry Reward can withstand the harsh Russian winters with frost and unexpected thaws with little or no yield loss. In the south, it also remains in demand because it has a high drought tolerance and is able to provide significant yields even in hot and dry climates. Interestingly, while in the lists of the State Register of Russia in 2018, raspberry There is no award - perhaps the period of registration of the variety has expired.

Variety description

Raspberry bushes. The award is moderately outstretched and characterized by a significant growth force - on average they grow about 1.8–2 m in height, but in favorable conditions with good care they can show better results. The shoots are very powerful and thick, they grow straight, at the base they can reach 2 cm in diameter. With all their power, they are moderately flexible and quite easy to bend if there is a need to cover them for the winter period. Annual raspberry shoots also grow quite thick, characterized by long internodes. The pubescence on them is absent, but there is a good wax coating. Initially, they have a green tint, but by the autumn they become reddish. There are very few thorns near the raspberry variety. The reward is very small and they are located mainly in the lower part of the stems. They are not sharp, though long, thick with a broad base, dark purple color.

The leaves are medium to large in size, wrinkled, with an average torsion.

Raspberry Reward has no tendency to crawl around the site, as it gives quite a moderate number of root offsprings. But for reproduction not on an industrial scale, they are usually enough. At the same time, seedlings take root well and are notable for their endurance during transplantation, storage and transportation.

In terms of ripening raspberry berries. Reward information is somewhat contradictory: in some sources, the variety is described as medium late, in others, as medium early. Of course, a lot depends on the cultivation region, but most gardeners, in their reviews, are inclined to believe that the Raspberry Reward can be called the average time of ripening. In the southern regions, crops are harvested at the end of June, and in the middle lane, and even more so in the Urals or in Siberia, closer to the middle of July.

Comment! Fruiting is quite friendly, within 3-4 weeks all the berries from the bushes can be collected.

Regarding the productivity of raspberries. Reward opinions can also differ to a rather strong degree. Many consider this variety a sort of champion in yield, at least among the old raspberry varieties. Others evaluate the yield of raspberries. The reward is average, which, however, is not surprising when compared with modern varieties of the intensive type. In fact, raspberry bushes of this variety are simply covered with berries, and this despite the fact that it does not require particularly regular dressings and watering. About 3 kg of delicious berries can be easily collected from one bush, which in industrial terms is about 100-120 centners / ha.

Raspberry variety. The award is characterized by moderate resistance to most fungal and viral diseases, in particular, to anthracnose, didimella, and the virus from overgrowth. It can be affected by raspberry mites and shoots gall midges, but strong and healthy plants, as a rule, successfully resist most pests and pathogens.

Particularly worth mentioning the varieties of winter hardiness. Shoots do not thrown out in winters with little snow or during thaws. Raspberry Award tolerates harsh frosty winters under shelters, because flexible shoots easily bend and stack for wintering.

Characteristics of berries

Bright, memorable, truly raspberry flavor of the variety. The award is known to gardeners in the Urals, in the Moscow region, and in the Krasnodar Territory.

In addition to the delicious taste, the berries of this class are characterized by the following characteristics:

  • The shape of the berries is round, slightly converging on the cone.
  • The color is bright, red-crimson, glossy shine is absent, but without it the berries look very attractive.

  • Transportability berries varieties Reward causes disagreement among gardeners, some consider it high, while others - unsatisfactory.
  • The use of raspberry is universal - it is very tasty fresh, and, of course, it makes excellent preparations for the winter. It can also be dried and frozen.

Advantages and disadvantages

Raspberry Award is not for nothing that they love, appreciate and grow gardeners on their plots for more than forty years. Its benefits include:

  • Wonderful taste and excellent quality of the berries.
  • Good winter hardiness and resistance to decay.
  • A small number of thorns, which facilitates the harvest and care of the bushes.
  • The overall unpretentiousness in the cultivation in conjunction with decent crops.

The main disadvantage of the raspberry Reward compared with modern varieties can be called a small responsiveness to intensive farming.

For summer residents and owners of small household plots, this feature is rather a plus - after all, for obtaining good yields of raspberries, constant intensive feeding and processing are not required. But for industrial cultivation, varieties that, with constant intensive care, are able to produce figures incomparable with raspberries are more suitable. The award in terms of yield figures.

Gardeners reviews

For many gardeners, the raspberry variety. The award is a lifesaver in many circumstances, and those who have been growing it for a long time are not going to abandon it in favor of new varieties.

Rostislav, 53, Magnitogorsk. On my site raspberry. The award has been around for decades, from the time of the Soviet Union, and no degeneration, as they often like to talk about, is not expected. As far as I know, the variety does not enjoy too much popularity, but you cannot please everyone. And I think that this is one of the best raspberry varieties for the conditions of the Urals. I am very pleased with it. In terms of ripening, it is quite early. The award has large berries, a bountiful harvest, good health. For all the years of cultivation, I have removed only one bush, which turned out to be susceptible to the virus of growth. In my conditions, it shows greater resistance to disease than, for example, the variety Newberg, which I eventually refused. The neighbor, for example, the Reward grows without any care at all - it appears at the dacha several times over the summer - and the crop is fantastic. Often, the berry even stays on the bushes for the joy of the birds. Hope, 37 years old, Moscow Region Last year, by chance, bought a single raspberry bush in the store on the advice of the seller. I landed him immediately in the ground, tended as I could and almost all summer, coming to the country at the weekend, collected from him a handful of large, sweet, fragrant berries. At the same time, she gained strength, and grew a year later, in the spring, I counted she already had about 14 bushes. I can imagine what a rather big crop I can harvest this year - a wonderful variety! Maria, 42, UfaNagrada is my favorite raspberry variety, which I have been growing for many years and under no circumstances am going to give it up. In our climate, its maturation begins around July 10-14. Berry is very tasty, large, round shape, well kept and transported. Harvest such that the color of the berries sometimes not visible shoots. Harvest can be on average during the month. Young shoots by autumn wipe out to 2.5 meters, you even have to slightly shorten them. Berry and sell, and use for blanks - it is enough for everyone.

Raspberry Reward is an old time-tested variety with an excellent reputation. Despite the fact that it cannot compete with modern varieties neither in yield, nor in berry size, its unpretentiousness and stability, as well as excellent taste qualities allow it to find its admirers among many gardeners and summer residents of various parts of Russia.
