Cherry Vocation

Variety Cherry combines compact growth with high yield. It is unpretentious in care, hardy, and its berries are very tasty. From the article you can find out why cherries with such attractive characteristics are not particularly popular among summer residents and gardeners.

Breeding history

Cherry variety. Calling was received within the walls of the Ukrainian Research Institute of Irrigated Horticulture, which is located in the city of Melitopol, Zaporozhye Region. The author of the variety is the famous breeder N.I. Turovtsev, behind which the experience of breeding several dozen varieties of cherries. The second name of the variety is Rosinka and it was obtained by crossing the Melitopol dessert and Samsonovka cherries. Perhaps, due to this fact, the cherry variety got another name among the people - Samsonovka Melitopol. Apparently, Cherry Calling is a rather old variety, at least it existed as early as the 80s of the last century, but the exact date of its breeding is unknown.

Culture description

Plants varieties Calling grow small in size, they reach a height of only 2-2.5 meters. Nevertheless, the variety Calling is not a shrub cherry, it looks like a real tree with a thick and rounded shape, only a dwarf.

Attention! Due to their attractive appearance, the cherry trees of Vocation can serve as a decoration of the site both during flowering and during fruiting.

Dwarf cherry The vocation is grown mainly on the territory of Ukraine and in the south of Russia: from Voronezh and to the south, although it is able to withstand temperatures down to -25 ° C.

The fruits of this variety have a flat-circular shape and a rather large size. The average weight of a cherry varies between 5 and 6 grams.

The color of cherries is saturated, red and burgundy. The core is juicy, the juice is also characterized by a red tinge. A small oval bone easily separates from the pulp, especially when fully ripe cherries.

Taste of fruits is saturated sweet, has a slight sourness harmoniously highlighting it. According to professional tasters, the taste of cherries received a score of 4.6 points.

Fruits contain:

  • 16.48% dry matter
  • 10, 03% of sugars
  • 0.96% acid

Most of the characteristics that distinguish the cherry variety Vocation can satisfy the tastes of the most fastidious gardeners.

Drought resistance, winter hardiness

The variety can be characterized as winter-hardy, because trees are able to easily withstand winter temperatures of up to -25 ° C, and buds in the spring with repeated frosts can retain up to 65% of flowers. Still, for most regions of central Russia and to the north, where frosts in the winter period can be off the scale of -30 ° C, the cultivation of the variety Vocation will be problematic.

But such a characteristic as drought tolerance, the cherry of this variety deserves 100%. With insufficient watering, the berries will only dry out a little on the trees, and the harvest for the next season will not be laid so intensively, but otherwise the tree will cope with adverse conditions. Although possible, it is better not to expose trees to similar tests.

Yield, fruiting

Variety Vocation is characterized by precocity, it is able to start producing the first harvests already after 2-3 years after planting. Every year the number of brought berries increases, and an 8-10-year-old tree is quite capable of bestowing upon its owner buckets of berries, which in total will weigh up to 30 kg. For dwarf trees, this is a very good indicator.

Scope of berries

Variety of cherries Calling can be called universal, since its berries have good taste. So, you can cook fragrant cherry jam from them, prepare compotes for the winter and delicious liqueurs. Berries can also be dried, frozen, make of them candy, marshmallow and much more.

Disease and Pest Resistance

Cherry Calling is also distinguished by its resistance to many pests and pathogens. The variety is excellently able to withstand brown haw mites, shows good resistance to common diseases of the cherry, such as monoliosis and coccomycosis.

Pollination, flowering period and ripening time

In terms of fruit ripening in descriptions of various sources, cherries of this variety are referred to either early or middle varieties.

Comment! If we consider that fruiting cherry Calling occurs somewhere in the second half of June, then it can be attributed rather to the early varieties.

The period of flowering varieties Calling falls around the beginning of May. And here lies the main trouble. The fact is that the variety Vocation is self-infertile. That is, in order to pollinate and obtain good harvests, it needs so that nearby, at a distance of no more than 300-400 meters, at least two other varieties of cherries or cherries grow.

In addition, they should coincide with cherry Calling on the timing of flowering. It turns out that owners of small plots wishing to plant a Rosinka dwarf tree for their decoration should definitely buy two other sorts of cherries, preferably self-pollinated, to it.

One of the best pollinators for cherries. Vocation will be varieties:

  • Memory Enikeeva
  • Sania
  • Youth
  • Chocolate girl
  • Baby girl
  • Griot Moskovsky

Many of them are also small in size and able to fit into the dimensions of a small garden. But those who choose one for themselves, the only variety, cherry Calling can scare away.

Important! But we should not forget that there are few varieties of dwarf cherry trees with a bountiful harvest of tasty berries.

Landing features

In order for the cherry tree to please you for many years, pay attention to the following nuances when planting.

Recommended dates

Planted plants with an open root system can be both in the fall and spring, only in the fall the choice is usually more and the seedlings look healthier. But in regions with severe winters, autumn planting can lead to freezing of young seedlings, therefore, the spring period is more preferable.

Choosing the right place

The choice of a sunny and windless place for planting is the key to a long life and abundant fruiting of tiny cherry trees.

Caution! You can not plant cherries on the site of the former cherry orchard, you should wait at least 4-5 years.

Heavy soils are diluted with sand, and acidic - by adding wood ash to the planting pit. Groundwater should be at a depth of at least 1.5-2 meters.

What crops can and should not be planted next to the cherry

Among the crops, the neighborhood of which is next to the cherry is not desirable to list:

  • Vegetables from the family of nightshade: tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, as well as tobacco, due to common pests and diseases.
  • Trees with an extensive root system such as: oak, birch, poplar, linden, spruce, pine.
  • Shrubs such as raspberries, gooseberries, currants, sea buckthorn - due to common diseases.
  • Apricots and peaches - due to other farming practices

But very favorable neighbors for cherries will be:

  • Sweet Cherry - can help in pollination
  • Plum, cherry plum, sloe - the same care
  • Honeysuckle
  • Elderberry - protects from fruit aphid
  • Hawthorn, mountain ash, grapes.

Selection and preparation of planting material

Variety seedlings can be sold with open roots or in closed containers. The open root system should be fairly branched, long not less than 20-30 cm without dry and dark areas. The height of the shoots should be about 100 cm. Check that there are no signs of diseases or injuries on the bark and on the leaves.

Before planting, the roots of a seedling are usually soaked for a few hours in a solution of the Maxim fungicide.

Landing algorithm

In spring, when a cherry seedling is planted, the buds should not be fully blossomed - this will improve its survival rate. Between the trees maintain a distance of 3-4 meters for better illumination. A peg is placed in the center of the dug hole in the size of the root system, and around it are spread the roots, which are gradually filled with the prepared land mixture. The root neck should be directly at ground level. The earth around the roots is compacted, and the shoot is tied up to a peg. The seedling is watered, immediately mulched, and during the first season after planting, watering should be regular - about 1 time in 10-15 days, depending on the weather.

Subsequent care for the culture

Cultivation of Cherry. Calling is easy - watering, feeding, pruning, protection from pests and diseases.

It is necessary to water the cherry in such a way that the ground under it remains moderately moist, but the cherry does not tolerate excess moisture. Fertilizing trees can be started from the beginning of the fruiting period. In the spring and early summer, top dressing is used, mainly containing nitrogen, and closer to autumn phosphate-potassium fertilizers are needed.

Pruning for cherries allows you to remove the thickening of the crown, serves to prevent fungal diseases and improves the quality of ripening berries. It is best to conduct it in early spring, a few weeks before bud break. Be sure to remove all damaged and dry branches, as well as those that intersect with each other and grow towards the center of the crown.

Important! In treelike cherries, to which the Calling variety belongs, once every 2-3 years, young shoots are slightly shortened in order to stimulate the formation of bouquet twigs and fruit pillows.

To protect against rodents and frost breeze, the tree trunk is painted with garden whitewash before branching. In order for the cherry to better survive the winter, in the autumn, after the leaves fall off, the soil around the stem must be well shed (about 8-10 liters per sapling) and mulch the stem near the stem.

Diseases and pests

Reviews of gardeners about cherry Callings are few, but all speak warmly of this variety.

Elena, 52, Volgograd Two old varieties of cherries were already growing in our garden, but they were quite sour and the harvest from them left much to be desired. Two years ago, the son decided to plant a cherry in honor of the born daughter. About the Grade I did not hear the vocation and thought it would be a big tree. But to our surprise, this summer the pretty tree bloomed, and we were able to pick several handfuls of juicy and tasty berries from it. It turns out that vocation is a dwarf cherry variety. We planted it right in the courtyard of the house and now every spring we will enjoy the flowering and buzzing of the bumblebees that flock to feast on him. Mikhail, 49 years old, Voronezh We grow up Chocolate, Pork, Miracle and Vocation. Harvest enough to twist, and for sale. There are no special problems with these varieties. In the spring I treat the traditionally Bordeaux mixture, white trunks, with pruning, I don’t bother much - I only prune damaged branches. I feed once in the spring - with a fertilizer complex - that's the whole care. The calling once a little bit the goats, but nothing - covered up the garden pitch and the tree still bears fruit.
