Radish Sora

For most gardeners, radishes are exclusively early spring crops, which are grown only in April-May. When trying to grow radishes in the summer, traditional varieties go to the arrow or root vegetables do not appear at all. But in recent decades, such radish hybrids have appeared that can be grown during the whole warm season and even in the winter on a windowsill or in a heated greenhouse. One of the most popular and unpretentious varieties of radish of this kind is Sora F1 hybrid.

Radish Sora was obtained by specialists of Nunhems B.V. from the Netherlands at the very end of the 20th century. Already in 2001, it was authorized for use on the territory of Russia and included in the State Register throughout the territory of our country. Due to its attractive characteristics, radish Sora is actively used not only by the owners of garden plots and summer residents, but also by small farmers.

The rosette of leaves is relatively compact, while the leaves grow extremely straight. The form of the leaves is wide ovoid, gray-green color. They have moderate pubescence.

Radish roots of radish Sora have a rounded shape, the pulp is juicy, not translucent. Color - bright scarlet.

The radish does not have a particularly large size, the average weight of one root is 15-20 grams, but it can reach up to 25-30 grams.

Root vegetables have a good, slightly spicy taste, are very good in a variety of vegetable salads and for decorating main dishes.

Important! At the same time, the germination of the seeds of radish Sora almost reaches 100% and the yield per square meter can reach 6.6-7.8 kg.

The hybrid of radish Sora belongs to the early ripening, 23-25 days pass from the appearance of the first seedlings to the ripening of full fruits. After 20-25 days, you can already selectively harvest the crop, but if you want to get roots of larger sizes, you can leave the radishes to ripen for up to 30-40 days. A feature of this hybrid is that even old and overgrown root vegetables will remain tender and juicy. They almost never have voids, for which this hybrid is valued by many gardeners who have tried it. Radish Sora is also well kept, especially in cool rooms, and it can be easily transported over relatively long distances.

Radish Sora fell in love with many of his amazing unpretentiousness and resistance to various adverse factors: he with equal stamina endures significant temperature drops, including frost and extreme heat. He is able to endure some shading, although this can not but affect the yield. Still, radish is a very light-loving culture.

It is also resistant to many diseases, in particular, to downy mildew and mucous bacteriosis.

Advantages and disadvantages

Radish Sora has many advantages compared to traditional varieties.

High yield

Practically not, except perhaps not the largest root crops.

Good resistance to bolting

Not very sensitive to daylight hours.

The fruits are always juicy and without voids.

High resistance to adverse conditions and diseases

Seed preparation for sowing

If you purchased the seeds of radish Sora in professional packaging, then they do not require any additional processing, since they are already fully prepared for planting. For other seeds, it is desirable to distribute them in size, so that germination is as friendly as possible. It will not be superfluous to also hold the seeds of radish for half an hour in hot water at a temperature of about + 50 ° C. This is the easiest way to disinfect from many diseases.

Features of growing

The main advantage of the hybrid Sora radish is its resistance to the formation of floral arrows, even in hot weather and in conditions of long daylight hours. It is for this reason that this radish can be grown as a conveyor from spring to autumn without stopping.

In the open ground

For sowing seeds of radish in open ground, it is necessary that the average daily temperature be positive. In different regions, this happens at different times. For the middle band, the most optimal time comes, as a rule, in early April. To protect against possible frost, and subsequently from the cruciferous flea, the radish crops are covered with a thin non-woven material, such as a spunbond or lutrasil.

In warm weather, under optimal moisture conditions, radish seeds can germinate in literally 5-6 days.

Attention! It must be understood that cold weather and possible frosts can delay the germination of radish seeds for several weeks.

On hot days during summer crops, the most important thing is to monitor the uniform and constant soil moistening, otherwise radish shoots may not be seen at all.

It is necessary to plant radish Sora to a depth of about 1 cm, but not more than 2 cm, otherwise it may either not rise at all, or the shape of the roots will be greatly distorted.

It is not recommended to fertilize the soil before sowing radish - it is better to do this before planting the previous crop. By the way, radishes can be grown practically after any vegetables, except for the cabbage family.

When planting radish, the following schemes are most often used:

  • Tape - consists of two rows, between which there are 5-6 cm. In the row between the plants should be from 4 to 5 cm. Between the tapes leave from 10 to 15 cm for more convenient weeding.
  • Solid - radish seeds are planted in solid rows according to the 5x5 cm scheme. In this case, it is convenient to prepare in advance a special device for marking.
Comment! Many gardeners have recently adapted to use for marking of crops pasted on the plank forms from under the eggs.

For continuous sowing, it is important to place exactly one seed in each cell. Radish Sora has almost 100% germination, and later it is possible to do without thinning of the seedlings, and this will greatly save expensive seed.

Watering is the main procedure for the care of radishes. Soil moisture should be maintained at the same level to avoid cracking of root crops.

In the greenhouse

The hybrid of radish Sora can be successfully grown in greenhouses, because it tolerates some shading. Thus, the timing of the harvest can be extended for another month in early spring and late autumn. You can even try to grow radish of Sora in the winter on the windowsill, but this makes little practical sense, rather to entice children with horticulture.

In greenhouses, special attention should be paid to the creation of a special temperature and humidity regime. At the time of germination and the first two or three weeks of seedling development, the temperature may be minimal (+ 5 ° + 10 ° C) and watering is moderate. Then it is desirable to increase the temperature and watering up to the harvest.

Growing problems

Problems of growing radish Sora

What could cause the problem

Low yield

Growing in the shade

Thickened landing

Root crop of small size or almost does not develop

Excess or lack of watering

Seeds too deeply embedded in the ground.

Lands with fresh manure introduced or, conversely, completely depleted

Cracking fruit

Sharp fluctuations in soil moisture

No germination

Overdrying during sowing

Diseases and pests

Signs of Radish Damage

Methods of prevention / treatment

Cruciferous flea

There are holes in the leaves - especially dangerous in the first two weeks after germination

When sowing, close the beds with radish non-woven material and keep it until the formation of root crops

From the time of sowing, sprinkle the beds and subsequently seedlings with a mixture of wood ash and tobacco dust

Use for spraying infusions of garden herbs: celandine, tobacco, tomato, dandelion

Blistering occurs on the roots, the plant fades and dies.

Do not plant radishes after growing vegetables from the cabbage family

Larisa, 45, Taganrog In our climate, I no longer hoped to grow a normal radish, because spring comes very quickly and in harmony, and even spring does not always have enough moisture — often small and ligneous roots are obtained. I read about the hybrid of Sora and its resistance to tsvetushnosti and decided to try. The shoots were really very friendly, the fruits also ripened pretty quickly. Taste is beyond praise - the whole radish is juicy, crispy, moderately spicy. This year, however, I liked it less - the harvest was not so rich and the roots themselves grew too long. True, this may have happened because of the excessive thickening of the crops. Tatyana, 52, Astrakhan I love radishes very much, and I couldn’t normally grow it myself until I tried the Sora hybrid. Sowed it, as usual, under the covering material at the end of March, and she pleased me with 100% seedlings. Even had to thin out a little. The first harvest was awesome, and I ventured to sow it again. And what - even despite the hot May, the radish grew and pleased the whole family with juicy and beautiful fruits. What a pleasure it is to eat your radish for the whole summer!

Even those gardeners who could not make friends with the radish for various reasons, after becoming acquainted with the Sora hybrid, realized that it was not so difficult to grow radishes. After all, the main thing is to choose a suitable grade for yourself.
