Grape Crystal

Many novice gardeners who decide to plant their own vineyard are often intimidated by the so-called technical grape varieties. Some even think in their inexperience that this grape, in general, is not suitable for food, and it can be allowed only for wine after appropriate processing. Of course, such ideas about technical grape varieties are fundamentally wrong, especially since most of them have fairly high taste characteristics. By the way, you never noticed with what great pleasure small children prefer technical grape varieties to table. Everything is explained quite simply - most technical varieties have a high sugar content, which is necessary for making high-quality wines. In addition, it is the technical grape varieties contain a greater amount of healthy elements, amino acids and vitamins. And children feel it very well intuitively.

Crystal grapes are considered a typical technical or wine variety. That does not interfere with using it for making juices, compotes, jellies and marshmallows. If you are going to plant a vineyard in one of the regions north of the Voronezh region, then in this case the grape variety Kristall, due to its greater simplicity, will be an excellent choice for you not only to make wine and other drinks, but also to use it fresh. In this case, the photo and description of the Kristall grape variety, as well as the reviews of those who grew it in their area, will allow you to finally make the right choice.

Variety description

The Hungarian breeders did a good job at one time, crossing the Amur grapes with Challotsy Layos, and only then the resulting hybrid was crossed again with the universal Hungarian variety Villars Blanc. Thanks to the Amur grape, the Crystal has formed a good frost resistance and unpretentiousness to many adverse conditions and diseases. And from Villars Blanc, he took good taste and resistance to mildew and gray rot.

In 2002, the Kristall grape variety was included in the state register of Russia and recommended for cultivation in the North Caucasus and Lower Volga regions. Originator made VNII Viticulture and Winemaking them. Potapenko, located in the city of Novocherkassk, Rostov region.

It must be borne in mind that in the open spaces of Ukraine, the hybrid form of grapes Black crystal, which has nothing to do with an ordinary crystal, appeared relatively recently. She was bred by amateur winemaker Kalugin V.M. according to his statement by crossing the Talisman and the Bulgarian variety with very large berries. The hybrid form may be interesting, but there is almost no reliable information about it at the moment, so any information about this variety is subject to additional verification.

Crystal grapes belong to very early varieties of ripening dates, the berries become salable, as a rule, 110-115 days after the start of budding. Under the conditions of the middle band, this falls around the middle and second half of August. But usually, if you plan to use the Crystal for making wine, it is allowed to hang for a while for sufficient sugar accumulation in the berries and their final ripening. For eating berries can be used much earlier if you like their taste.

Comment! Crystal grapes are capable of preserving almost to the very frosts on a bush, practically without losing their external data.

However, at the same time, the acidity of berries decreases to 4 g / l, which is good for fresh consumption, but may not very well affect the quality of the wine.

Bushes usually have an average power of growth. A curious feature of the Crystal variety is the possibility of the appearance of leaves with different degrees of dissection on the same bushes. The variety is able to demonstrate good yields, since 85-90% of the total number of fruitful shoots are observed. On average, the yield of grape bushes Crystal from one hectare is about 160 centners, in favorable conditions it can reach 200 centners per hectare.

The maturation of the shoots is excellent, reaching 100%. The color of young shoots is reddish. On average, about 1.3 clusters per shoot.

Bushes are prone to thickening, so you need to regularly remove stepchildren, it is especially important to carry out this procedure before flowering, so that the green mass does not take away nutrition from the peduncles.

Tip! During harvest, removing the leaves around the grapes will increase the sugar content in the berries.

The rooting rate of cuttings of this grape variety is excellent. They rooted without problems just in the ground, even without the use of special stimulants of rooting. Also well cuttings grow together with almost any stock.

Crystal flowers are bisexual, so they do not require additional pollinators, while it can itself serve as an excellent pollinator for varieties with a female type of flowers.

Winter hardiness in the bushes increased, to -29 ° C, although according to reviews of gardeners when growing Crystal in the middle lane, he still needs shelter.

Very attractive in the characteristics of this variety is the presence of genetic resistance to gray rot, which is very important in case of possible wet and rainy weather during the ripening of berries.

Also, Crystal grapes are characterized by increased resistance to the main fungal diseases: oidium - 2.5 points, mildew - 2 points (on a five-point scale, in which 0 is full resistance).

Characteristics of bunches and berries

The Crystal grape variety is distinguished by the following characteristics of bunches and berries:

  • The clusters are predominantly conical or cylindrical-conical in shape and have an average density.
  • The size of the clusters is average, the mass of one cluster can vary from 180 to 200 grams.
  • The berries and clusters are well attached to the stem, so they do not crumble and can hang on a bush for a long time.
  • Crystal grapes can not be called large, the weight of a grape is 1.8-2.5 grams.
  • The berries have a round or slightly oval shape, the color can vary from yellow to white-green, in bright sunlight there can be a light pinkish color.
  • For the berries of this class is characterized by a well-pronounced pruinovy or waxy bloom, covering the skin and providing additional protection against the penetration of harmful microorganisms.
  • The skin itself is very strong, which is typical of most technical grape varieties.
  • But the flesh is very juicy, tender, good harmonious taste without additional impurities.
  • Grapes gain sugar content up to 18-19 Brix, and acidity in the first ripening period is 6-7 g / l. As mentioned above, with a long stay on the bushes, the acidity begins to decrease and reaches 4-5 g / l. When grown in the southern regions or in the wall culture on the south side, the Crystal is able to gain sugar up to 23 Brix.
  • The main use of Kristall grapes is the manufacture of dry table wines, such as Sherry. Tasters appreciate the taste of table wine produced from Kristall grapes at 8.5 points, and sparkling wine at 9.1 points.
  • Also from this grape variety you can make a very tasty juice, while the juice content in the berries is 70%.
  • The bones in the berries, of course, exist, but they are not really felt during the meal, the skin is felt more.
  • Cracking berries and grapes in the grapes are not observed, but the lower brush with a long state of preservation on the bushes can begin to become faded.

Features of growing

Grape Crystal begins to bear fruit for 2-3 years after planting. Beginner gardeners should be aware that the first two years after planting should not be tested for cold resistance bushes - it is desirable to cover them. With age, the vines can simply be lowered to the ground, allowing their shelter with snow. And in the southern regions you can even try to leave shoots on the trellis for wintering.

Pruning is better to carry out quite short - 2-3 eyes. The optimal number of left buds for an adult bush is about 60.

The variety is quite moisture-loving, with a lack of water may not manifest itself in the best way.

Grapes of this variety responds well to fertilizing with microelements, especially before flowering, since, for example, a lack of boron and zinc can adversely affect the formation of ovaries.

The thickening of the bush should also not be allowed, because the ovaries may fall off from this and, as a result, the yield will decrease, the appearance of the clusters will deteriorate.

Tip! Try using a regular paint brush to comb the brush during the formation of ovaries. This will help cut off excess debris and improve the appearance and quality of the clusters.

Gardeners reviews

Crystal grapes are very popular among professionals of winegrowers who grow it exclusively for making wine, and among amateur gardeners.

Maria, 36 years old, Moscow region I think that the technical grape variety Crystal can be called only because of the small size of brushes and berries, and its taste is no worse than many table varieties. At least, the reviews of all our friends in the Moscow region, who have tasted the grapes of Crystal in our region, are extremely positive. The variety belongs to the early ripening - here it matures around mid-August. I was not satisfied only with its frost resistance, because after two years of growing without shelter, about half of the kidneys were frozen to death without recovery. And only when in the third year I covered him with spruce leaves, the wintering went well, without loss. Among the relative disadvantages we can also mention the berries pea as a result of cold and rainy weather during flowering. But, the grapes shows a very good resistance to various sores. For all three years, no treatments were carried out at all, and there were no problems, but other varieties picked up both oidium and gray rot. Dmitry, 42, Bryansk region Crystal Grate is practically trouble-free for growing varieties. I would even call it universal, because in our family it goes for wine only as an additive, and half of the crop is eaten fresh. An additional advantage is its early maturation, in our area until September, he manages to fully mature, and this in itself is a lot. Of course, he needs care in any case, and to feeding, and to pruning, he is very partial, but it reproduces very well and easily. I have already distributed several seedlings to friends and acquaintances.

Crystal berries do not shine with a trade dress and, despite fairly good preservation, are unlikely to be too attractive to buyers. But in taste it can compete with many table varieties, plus it is highly resistant and unpretentious in its care. Therefore, as a homemade grape for personal use, it will be one of the worthy candidates.
