Chokeberry Aronia: Planting and Care

Planting and care for chokeberry do not require special skills and skills. The vigorous, vigorous aronia is developing well, getting the minimum maintenance typical of fruit trees and bushes in the garden. Proper conduct of landing largely determines the further development of the black mountain ash. Culture has few features and whims. But only considering them, can we grow a really beautiful, healthy and fruitful black chokeberry.

How to plant black chokeberry

Mistakes made when choosing a time or place, insufficient preparation of the soil, improper placement of a black plant seedling into the ground may not be immediately apparent. To correct such shortcomings can be difficult.

For the successful cultivation of chokeberry, the main requirement for the landing site is adequate lighting. Aronia lays its fruit buds along the entire periphery of the bush, for full flowering and even growth you need a lot of sunlight. Even partial shading has a poor effect on the decorative black ash.

Self-polluting black chokeberry is able to bloom and bear fruit in single plantings. And yet the neighborhood with related crops (for example, red rowan) has a beneficial effect on yield. The ability of blackfruits to tolerate pruning well and grow in dense groups is used to create free-form hedges.

Where to plant black chokeberry

The unpretentious blacktop is capable of settling down on a variety of soils. It grows on sandy, rocky slopes, in wetlands. But still, the best results are given by the cultivation of blackfruits on drained loams, with low acidity. Loose fertile soil and sunny place will be the best choice for chokeberry.

The bulk of the root system of the black mountain ash lies no deeper than 50 cm. Spring flooding is not intimidated by it. Groundwater coming close to the surface does not cause any harm to black chokeberry.

Tip! Seedlings should be protected from cold winds. The adult aronia plants themselves will serve as a shield for the garden. You can plant black chokeberry on the edge of the plot on the leeward side. When creating protection in the fields, aronia is used as a filling of the middle tier of the forest belt.

When to plant black chokeberry

Chokeberry Aronia for planting fit early spring. Choosing dates, pay attention to the climatic conditions in a particular area: the duration of the warm period, the severity of the climate, the presence of return frost.

Aronia healthy planting material for spring work should be with swollen, live buds, but still without leaves. To plant black chokeberry in the spring should be after the final thawing of the soil. It is advisable to have time to work before the start of the active growing season. Most often, this period is observed in April. Planting in the spring gives young black chokeberry a whole season for active growth before going for the winter.

Spring shocks are dangerous for young shoots. With the threat of recurrent frosts in the spring, seedlings of black chokeberry harbor.

How to plant black chokeberry

The seat, as well as the nutrient substrate for the roots are prepared in advance. The minimum size of the pit for chokeberry sapling is 50 cm in width and depth. Even if the roots of rowan are small, the place is prepared as standard. The whole volume of the landing pit will be used by the blackfruit during the growth of the bush.

The soil taken out when digging a hole is mixed with humus (10 kg), wood ash (about 2 tbsp.) And 1 tbsp. superphosphate. Seats are located at a distance of 3 m from each other. When forming a hedge of black mountain ash, a slight thickening is acceptable, but not closer than 2 m.

The process of planting chokeberry aronia step by step:

  1. The pit for planting is filled with prepared nutrient substrate 1/3.
  2. Spill well-settled water and wait until it is completely absorbed into the ground.
  3. Blackberry seedlings are set in the center of the pit so that after planting the root collar is above the soil.
  4. The pit is filled with fertile substrate completely, the soil is compressed around the seedling.
  5. Planting blackfodder plentifully watered. After shrinking the soil, it is mulched with a layer of about 2 cm.
Comment! Before planting a black mountain ash, shoots on a seedling are shortened to 5 live buds. So rooting will happen easier, and the plant is more likely to start growing.

What can be planted next to the black chokeberry

An important factor when choosing a neighborhood for a blackfruit is the height of the plants. The requirement of Aronia to light requires that the surrounding trees and bushes do not even partially obscure it.

So when planting a number of black and black ashberries, the first one is located to the south. She harder to bear the shadow of a high relative. Any species of wild and cultivated varieties of mountain ash get along well with each other and benefit from over-pollination.

Black Aronia easily transfers any neighborhood in the garden. Do not plant it only near cherries, due to the presence of pests (aphids and sawfly) that infect both plants. Other garden trees and shrubs tolerate planting well next to the blackfruit.

Vegetable crops also have no contraindications for growth in the same area with chokeberry. However, sometimes there is a mutual infection of aphids in a black wolf with berries: strawberries, raspberries, currants.

Is it possible to plant a black animal near an apple tree

The apple tree is one of the most tolerant trees in the garden. Like aronia, it is undemanding to the neighborhood. Co-planting can be beneficial for both crops, provided that each other is not shaded.

Leaving some black berries on chokeberry, birds are attracted to the garden. Such natural destruction of pests is beneficial to the apple tree. Prophylactic treatment of crops for diseases can be carried out together, at the same time, with the same preparations. Therefore, the neighborhood of black rowan and apple can be called successful.

How to transplant chokeberry to a new place

With timely planting and good care, the black mountain ash quickly turns into a large shrub, and after 2-3 years it begins to bear fruit. But sometimes it becomes necessary to transfer the adult plant to another place. It is better to do this kind of work in early spring, before the leaves bloom on a black wolf.

Aronia's vitality allows it to successfully take root even in adulthood. If a well-developed, dense bush is transplanted, at the same time the black chokeberry can be propagated. For this, the excavated plant is divided by root into several parts, and the resulting "delenki" are seated as independent seedlings.

Painless transplantation of chokeberry chokeberry with a whole bush:

  1. The plant is deeply digged around the perimeter of the trunk circle (at least 1 m in diameter).
  2. With a shovel cut as much as possible a large piece of soil with roots.
  3. A lump of earth should be carefully removed from the ground, slowly lifting rowan by the branches.
  4. Having laid the roots on the burlap or other dense material, transport the black chokeberry to a new place.

Landing pit is prepared by the size of the resulting coma. Abundantly moisturizing the ground, put the roots of blackflood in it no deeper than in the same place.

Tip! Gardeners are advised when transplanting chokeberry to ensure that the bush at the new location was also oriented to the cardinal points, as before digging.

A well-performed transplant will not be a shock for an adult black ashberry. According to gardeners, aronia bushes can bear fruit in the same season.

How to grow black chokeberry

Black chokeberry is tolerant to frost and drought, can grow on its own without much attention. But really gorgeous bushes and an abundance of berries are gardeners who observe the necessary agricultural techniques. Regular pruning of black insects, weeding, loosening, several waterings per season, a small dressing - all that is required for the normal development of the culture.

How to prune chokeberry

The first formation is required when the black insect is planted. The branches are shortened to reduce the load on the root system and to give the bushes black chokeberry the desired shape in the future. The position of the last bud on the stem determines the direction of growth of future shoots.

Important! The rules for pruning vigorous crops require mandatory thinning of the crown and removal of shoots growing inside the bush.

The adult, well-formed black chokeberry consists of 10-12 skeletal branches. To rejuvenate the plant, replacing old shoots with young shoots, they begin at the 8th year of chokeberry life. Even a weakened, thickened chernoplodka can be brought back to life. Bushes completely cut to the ground, restored in a season. Black berries will appear on such aronia in a year.

The main work on pruning chokeberry is carried out in early spring. All old, cracked, dried branches are to be removed. Aronia lends itself perfectly to shaping: for several years, it can be given the appearance of a spherical bush or a miniature tree.

It should be remembered that the next year's harvest of black mountain ash lays on the tips of the branches. Therefore, cutting off the tops of the shoots, you should accept the temporary loss of the crop.

How can you feed black chokeberry

Spring work on the care of chokeberry can begin with the introduction of nitrogen supplements in the trunk circle. The black wolf responds well to both organic and mineral compounds.

Re-fertilize rowan during or after flowering. For blackfloods, potash preparations and ash pollination are preferred. The third dressing may consist of a mixture of phosphate and potash complex fertilizers. It is important not to fertilize aronia with nitrogen from the second half of summer. Even late-applied manure can slow down the preparation of the branches and lead to the freezing of non-woody shoots.

Rules of competent watering

A robust chernoplodka when planting and care in the open field can do for a long time without irrigation. Most often, a sustainable culture for survival is enough rainfall. But luxurious flowering, bright foliage and abundance of black fruits can be achieved only with abundant moistening of chokeberry in the following periods:

  • in early spring, if there is little snow, and there is not enough rainfall, they produce the first deep water;
  • in summer, if the period of fruit loading coincides with dry time, the black watered is watered a second time.

The bulk of the roots of blackflies lies shallow, however, each plant requires at least 40 liters of water for full watering.

Mulching and soil loosening

Watering can be combined with dressing of chokeberry and weeding. Moist soil loosened and covered with a layer of mulch. A layer of grass residues (without seeds) protects the soil from drying out, and also significantly reduces the time spent on subsequent loosening, weeding around the black worm.

Important! Digging near-stem circles around black chokeberry is impossible. Loosening is carried out to a depth of no more than 10 cm.

Is it possible to grow aronia from seeds

The black chokeberry shrub is propagated in various ways: cuttings, layering, root division, offspring. But even with only the fruits of the variety that you like, it is quite possible to grow chokeberry from the seeds. This method is more complicated than vegetative propagation and has several features.

Rules seed cultivation of black ash:

  • purchased or own planting material needs to be stratified by cold for at least 90 days;
  • before being placed in the refrigerator, black rowan seeds are soaked for a day, then dried slightly;
  • before disembarking, the material should be heated at room temperature;
  • sand and sawdust are added to the black seedling substrate to facilitate the structure;
  • deepen the seeds of chokeberry in the soil by 5-7 cm.

Emerging blackberry sprouts should be regularly watered and deposited, as they grow, in separate containers. By moving to the open ground, the plants will be ready by the fall of next year.

Diseases of Aronia

With proper planting and minimal care for chokeberry, a sustainable plant does not hurt. A healthy shrub exhibits high immunity to viral, bacterial infections, little interest in pests. Most of the diseases of black chokeberry, noted by gardeners, are caused by various strains of fungi:

  • peripheral rot - affects wood;
  • cytosporosis - leads to wilting of the branches, death of the bark;
  • ramulariasis, septoriosa, phyllostikosis patches - black leaf leaves first of all destroy the leaves;
  • Aronia fruit rot appears on the berries.

Cracking of the bark, weakening of the plant during the period of drought or after hibernation, as well as thickening of the bushes can be provoking factors for the appearance of a fungal infection on chokeberry. Diseases are especially activated during cold, prolonged spring with heavy rainfall.

Ways to combat all fungal black chokeberry lesions are the same:

  1. Double preventive treatment of rowan bushes Bordeaux liquid (1%): before the blooming of leaves and after flowering.
  2. Destruction of all infected residues during sanitary pruning of the blackfruit.
  3. At the first signs of infection in the garden, the soil around chokeberry shed copper-bearing solutions.

If lesions of blackfruits could not be avoided, continue treatment with iron sulfate. It is necessary to collect and destroy diseased berries, stems, leaves. Dead plants of black rowan are removed from the site along with the roots and burned. From chemical preparations for spraying use: HOM, basezol, Abiga-Peak, other systemic fungicides.

Pests of Aronia

Black chokeberry has no specific pests, all insects are capable of causing damage to other garden and wild-growing crops. Therefore, their appearance, even in small quantities, should not be overlooked.

Pests of Aronia:

  • rape bug - a black beetle with a metallic sheen of elytra, appears in large quantities in August;
  • willow weevil - a bouncy black insect with a rosette curved downwards, appears at the end of May, whitish larvae eat away leaves from the inside;
  • different species of sawflies that infest wild-growing trees, garden crops, berries;
  • beech moth and moth - small butterflies, appearing in April, their larvae-caterpillars cause great damage to the foliage.

It is possible to save the black insect, as well as other garden plantings from pests, by regularly holding such events:

  1. When the buds swell and after flowering, the branches are sprayed with one of the following preparations: Karbofos, Kemifos, Fufanon, Aktellik.
  2. Fallen leaves, black fruit harvest and burn.
  3. With the mass appearance of pests repeat the processing, observing a break before picking berries.

An important measure of protection from pests is the spring treatment of all plantings in the garden. Prevention requires not only fruit trees or berry bushes.

Important! Common black insects are also present with hazel, birch, oak, beech, and alder.

Planting and caring for chokeberry do not cause problems even for novice gardeners. Life-long chokeberry, with competent agricultural techniques, is decorative from early spring to the very cold. The yields of black, healthy berries increase markedly with appropriate care and timely prevention of diseases.
