The photo and description of the barberry Erect completely corresponds to the geometric elegance of the bush lines in real life. For the dacha, the plant is unpretentious and perfectly emphasizes the vertical composition of the garden design. Description of Barberry Erect

A plant from the family Barberry. Japan and China are considered to be the homeland of this variety. The shrub grows in a kolonovidny way, has the original form. The advantage among the relatives is a change in the color of the leaves during the entire period of growth and flowering of the shrub. Thunberg has analogues in the form of varieties Harlequin and Red Chief.

The height of Erect reaches 1.5-2 m, the diameter of the shrub is about 1 m. The foliage is bright green, closer to the autumn the color changes to bright orange or red. For the first year, the plant grows by 10-15 cm. The growth of a shrub depends on the availability of nutrients in the soil. The flowering barberry of Thunberg Erect is from May to June with bright yellow numerous flowers that are gathered in small racemes.

Variety of barberry Thunberg Erect grows well in the sun and in partial shade. The plant grows on soil with any acidity, resistant to frost and drought. A moderately moist soil is desirable for good growth. After flowering, bushes strew with bright red fruits. Crop ripens in September, the berries are not sprinkled until frost. Fruits can be eaten dried. The shrub is easy to cut, it takes on the desired shape during growth.

Important! The variety of barberry Thunberg Erect does not tolerate high soil moisture and climate. Planting is designed for 4 climatic zones of the strip of Russia.

Barberry Erekta in garden design

With the presence of barberry bushes, the landscape design of the garden acquires the completeness of the image. The number of shades is constantly growing due to the crossing of varieties. Evergreen bushes emphasize a minimalistic landscape, and planting bushes in a row visually expands the garden. The plant is well combined with other low-growing shrubs. In a flowerbed with flowers, the barberry of Thunberg Erect takes a dominant position because of color and size, therefore, no more than 3 bushes are recommended for planting on one flowerbed.

Thorny varieties are planted around the perimeter of the fence, which provides additional protection from rodents. Variety Erekta has a memorable color, so its presence in the garden with a bias on the eastern theme will not be superfluous. Also, excessive seating of the barberry in the garden will make it look loaded. The plant with varying color is used to level the landscape in the form of piece or group seating.

For the northern regions of Russia, agronomists developed frost-resistant varieties that also tolerate high soil moisture:

  • Korean;
  • whole edge;
  • Ottawa.

In other regions for landscape design I use classical and barberry varieties listed above. Also, there are options for design projects, where the landscape is completely covered with bushes varieties Tunberg Erect.

Planting and caring for the barberry of Thunberg Erect

The planting time of the barberry depends on what the plant owner is planting. It is better to plant seedlings of Erecte shrubs in spring, sowing seeds is necessary in early autumn. For autumn, the seeds adapt to the climate and will well endure frosts. Soil for planting should be decontaminated, have in admixture fertilizer compost or manure.

Tip! It is necessary to know the acidity of the soil.

High acidity of the soil is reduced by admixture of lime or clay. The lack of acidity does not affect the growth of the plant.

Preparation of seedlings and planting area

Thunberg Erect seedlings for planting in growth should be no less than 5-7 cm. With such parameters, the plant already has a strong root system, which allows the plant to be planted both in autumn and in early spring. Before planting, the barberry is inspected for damage, dents on stems, withered or rusty leaves. It is necessary to immediately dispose of diseased seedlings, as other bushes can become infected. Also, seedlings watered with growth stimulant for 2-3 days before planting. In this case, the plant will grow well even without admixture of fertilizers in the soil. Land for planting should be well lit by the sun or have partial shade. Landing in a sunny place should be accompanied by timely watering. Shrubs are planted with single seedlings at a distance of 1 to 2 m. The site is cleared of weeds, dug up at the level of a bayonet spade.

Tip! For hedges, shrubs are planted in a row at a distance of 50-70 cm, for this method of fence use prickly varieties of plants.

Landing rules

Before planting, the soil is mixed with sand, compost and humus. The soil should be loose, but not soft. The barberry planting is done in single holes, which are dug 15 cm deep. Fine gravel is poured at the bottom, so the roots will get more room to grow. Seedlings can be cleaned from the ground or make planting along with the soil in which the barberry of Thunberg Erect grew.

Watering and feeding

The first watering is done immediately after planting. Barberry Thunberg Erect does not tolerate a highly moist soil, therefore watering is carried out every 3-4 days. The first year of watering should be timely, although it is better to monitor the state of soil moisture and water only when it is really necessary.

Top dressing do microelements in the first year of life. In subsequent years, nitrogen fertilizers are added for good growth. In early spring, they feed with superphosphates. Erecta will survive the winter with little damage if potassium or urea solution is added to the soil.

Primary pruning is done in late autumn: remove damaged and dry shoots. Dry branches of Thunberg Erect are characterized by a light brown color. After two years of growth, erect barberry is thinned. With the onset of spring pruning of old shoots at the level of 3-4 cm from the base of the roots is done. On a hedge, pruning is easier as the shoots of the plant are directed upwards.

Preparing for the winter

Judging by the description, Thunberg Erect barberry is a winter-hardy plant, but for the winter the shrub is prepared as a normal tree. As soon as the air temperature drops to - 3-5 ° C, the barberry is covered with spruce branches, tarpaulin or wrapped with cloth. Some gardeners cut the bushes completely and sprinkle them with dry sawdust or leaves. Also collected in a bundle bare branches and tied with a rope, then wrapped with a thick cloth. Outside, the base of the bushes are covered with fir branches. With the onset of spring, shelters are removed, pruning is done 3-4 days after removing the cover. So the barberry quickly gets used to the climate.

Thunberg Erect barberry varieties are propagated by:

  • seeds, which are contained in the berries;
  • young cuttings that remain after winter pruning;
  • rooted shoots;
  • separation of the shrub when seeding.

Seeds are harvested in late autumn, dried and planted in single pots. So the plant grows before the onset of spring. Seeds are planted to a depth of 3-4 cm. Cuttings after pruning are placed in water until the first roots appear. Planting cuttings of barberry produce in wet soil. Above the roots, dig a hole into which a branch or a trimmed cutting is inserted. Then sprinkle with earth and water every 3-5 days. The adopted tap becomes strong and grows in parallel with the rest of the stalks of the barberry Erect. Shrub shared when transplanting to a new location. One bush can be divided into 3-4 parts, but it is necessary to monitor the integrity of the root system of the barberry.

Diseases and pests

Barberry Thunberg Erect is subject to leaf rust disease. After planting, the plant is treated with a solution of diluted potassium permanganate or chemicals. The powdery mildew infects the plant, therefore at the first signs of the disease the bush is completely destroyed. From the powdery mildew, the plant is treated with a dilute solution of sulfur.

Barberry is often attacked by aphids. In early spring and summer, the Tunberg Erekta bushes are sprayed with tobacco dust.

The photo and description of barberry Erect do not convey the full perfection of this plant. Shrub unpretentious to care, seedlings cost gardeners in the minimum price. Often bred erect shrubs to align landscape design. Barberry creates a balance in the combination of plants of different height and color.
