Barberry Thunberg Rose Glow (Berberis thunbergii Rose Glow)

Barberry Rose Glow is a bright accent in the flower garden, perfectly combined with many plants. Among the many varieties of barberry Thunberg, this is characterized by its particular decorative. Amazing pink color foliage from afar gives the impression of violent flowering.

Description of Barberry Rose Glow

Only wild species of barberry in nature - more than 500, many cultural varieties created by breeders based on them. Among them, the most barberry Thunberg, in this large group includes Rose Glow. In growth, he overtakes many of its representatives. Good care will allow it to reach a height of 1.5 m in 10 years. The spherical crown is even wider - up to 2 m. The branches grow by 15 cm annually.

Adult egg-shaped leaves of this barberry variety have purple color, slightly diluted with dark pink specks. But the main beauty gives Rose Glow young growths, they, like the leaves, are painted in rich pink color. This alone would be enough to plant a plant in the garden. But nature became generous and painted them with spots and stripes of white-pink and bronze-red color. In the bright sun they seem silvery.

Good shrub and in bloom. At the very end of May or in the first decade of June, each shoot is decorated with yellow flowers with outer petals of reddish coloration. They can hang from the leaf axils one by one or 2-3. When the foliage that has become orange by the fall, will fall, the bush will long be hung with bright corals oblong rather large, up to 1 cm, berries. Like most decorative barberries, they are inedible, although not poisonous. At this time, long spines are also clearly visible, sitting one at a time in the nodes of woody gray shoots.

A description of the barberry of Thunberg Rose Glow would be incomplete if not to mention its other characteristics:

  • frost resistance;
  • unpretentiousness;
  • undemanding to growing conditions;
  • drought tolerance;
  • resistance to diseases and pests;
  • the ability to tolerate haircuts and poor environmental conditions of a big city.

You can long list the advantages of barberry Rose Glow, but the photo will say more about it:

Barberry Rose Glow in Landscape Design

From barberry Rose Glow you get a wonderful solitaire, a very beautiful shrub in the company of your fellow barberries, but with less bright foliage, they will be his beautiful backdrop. Of the perennial shrubs, the spirea is the most suitable as a companion - birch-leaved or Grefshaym: a waterfall of white flowers on a pink background looks very elegant.

You can plant next to the hydrangea paniculata, for example, Vanilla Fraise or Limelight. Initially, white, and then pinking inflorescences will create an excellent color ensemble with a rich color of Rose Glow foliage. It looks great next to the ephedra: junipers, thujas, Konica spruce or low fir. Rose Glow cuts well, suitable for natural hedges or a neat curb.

Tip! You can use this sort of barberry to create topiary.

Barberry Rose Glow bushes will look good on the edge of planting of tall trees, but you can not combine it with poplars, acacias or elderberry. Because of the volatile production of these plants, it will be depressed and may die completely. It is not necessary to plant beside him and letniki. The surface root system of the barberry is easily damaged when digging.

Planting and caring for the roseberry barberry Thunberg

To carry them out is easy due to the unpretentiousness of the shrub, but some features still exist. Rose Glow has certain preferences when choosing a landing site and nuances in care. If you comply with them, the decorative plants will always be on top.

Preparation of seedlings and planting area

Like all variegated barberries, the peak of its ornamental Rose Glow can demonstrate only with sufficient lighting. It will grow well in the partial shade, but the color of the leaves will turn pale. There are other requirements for Rose Glow’s habitat and soil preparation:

  • it grows best on loams or sandy loams on which nothing has been planted before;
  • soil fertility should be at an average level, it is not necessary to fertilize the bush actively;
  • soil reaction may slightly, but not too much differ from neutral one way or the other;
  • drainage is a prerequisite for successful growth of Rose Glow;
  • despite the drought resistance of the barberry, the plot should be sufficiently moist when landing.
Important! Barberry - one of the few ornamental plants that can put up with stony soils.

In addition to good lighting, Rose Glow needs protection from strong winds. There, where it will grow, it is impossible to stagnate moisture in the spring or during long rains. Groundwater should be low.

If a barberry sapling with a closed root system is purchased, it does not need special preparation. You may have to hold the pot in water for 20 minutes if the soil in it is very dry.

Barberry Rose Glow plants with open roots will require more thorough preparation:

  • conduct an audit of the root system, cutting out all dried and damaged roots;
  • soak them in water to which any stimulator of root formation has been added (diluted according to the instructions) for 3 hours.

Landing rules

First you need to decide on the purpose for which this barberry variety is planted:

  • as a tapeworm, it will need a lot of space so that as Rose Glow grows crowded, closely growing tall plants can close the view;
  • when disembarking in a group of several bushes, at least 1.5 m should be left between them;
  • when building a hedge for its density, the distance between plants is 50 cm.

Both autumn and spring planting of barberry Rose Glow is possible. An indispensable condition - the presence of plants in the resting phase. Why do experienced gardeners insist on this? The fragile roots of barberry will not be able to adequately feed the already awakened plant. At best, it will hurt for a long time, at worst, it will die.

The only exceptions are container seedlings. Their intact root system immediately starts to grow. This barberry is well acclimatized throughout the growing season.

Landing Algorithm:

  • At Rose Glow, the roots expand in width, not in depth, so it doesn’t need a large pit for planting: for 2-3 summer seedlings - 25 cm deep, for older adults - up to 50 cm, the main guideline is the size of the root system; the pit should be spacious.
  • If you plan to build a hedge from the Rose Glow barberry, it is easier to dig a ditch, its size is 40 cm wide, the depth is the same, and the length is determined by the need for taking into account that the seedlings will be located there every 50 cm.
  • Drainage is required when planting barberry plants of any age.
  • Prepare a planting mixture to fill the pit, mixing in equal quantities garden soil, humus and sand.
  • A glass of ash and 100 g of phosphate fertilizers are added to each well.
  • Pour in a bucket of water.
  • Straighten the roots of barberry, not shaking off the ground with them.
  • Fall asleep planting mixture, compacting it, and re-watered.
Important! A little deepening of the barberry when planting is needed only if you are going to divide the bush in a few years.

In all the others, the root neck should be at a level with the soil or higher by a couple of cm.

The final touch is mulching with humus or peat. They should not be neglected - the moisture in the soil will be better preserved, Rose Glow is more likely to start growing.

Watering and feeding

Regular, once a week, moistening is required only to newly planted plants. Already rooted barberries need watering only in case of severe drought or at high temperatures. Cold water will not work, it needs to be heated in the sun.

Feed barberries from the second year of life:

  • for the speedy growth of young shoots in the spring they give fertilizers rich in nitrogen - dissolve Art. a spoonful of urea in a bucket of water and poured under an adult bush, for kids, divide this amount in half or into 3 parts, depending on age;
  • on the eve of flowering, a mineral fertilizer will be required, containing the entire set of nutrients, including trace elements in the amount of Art. spoon on the bush, they are scattered, mixed with the soil shallow loosening and carry out watering;
  • at the beginning of autumn, 15 g of superphosphate and 10 g of potassium sulfate with a dry form are introduced under each adult bush of Rose Glow barberry and put up to loosening.

Organic barberry is fed every 3 years. Suitable slurry - 1.5 liters per bucket of water or 1 liter of bird droppings for the same amount of water. Watering with clean water is then required.

This is a rather traumatic operation, considering the spines.

Tip! It is better to use for cutting barberry Rose Glow not pruner, and garden shears.

Types of pruning depend on the role that Rose Glow plays in the garden:

  • the tapeworm has enough to form a crown of a spherical shape, cutting off excess branches once a season in spring;
  • Barberry haircuts are cut more often - at the beginning of June and the first decade of August, using a special long ruler or wooden bar to get the same level of crown of plants; Important! The following year, after the landing of the Rose Glow barberry, the shoots are cut at least half as much as a hedge for better branching.
  • for natural hedges, only sanitary pruning is required to remove dry, frozen, broken or incorrectly growing branches.

If the bush is strongly exposed below, you will need a rejuvenating pruning on the stump. The barberry will quickly recover and will be decorative again.

Preparing for the winter

Barberry Thunberg comes from warm lands - Japan and China. Its varieties, including Rose Glow, have a higher resistance to frost. But young plants still need shelter in the first few seasons. Strongly zealous with him is not necessary - just wrap a barberry bush in one layer of nonwoven material with a thickness of 60 microns. Excessive shelter barberry will create another problem - vypryvanie shoots. It will not be superfluous to insulate its root system by pouring a bucket of humus under the bush.

Barberry varieties, including Rose Glow, senselessly propagated by seed - seedlings will not repeat their parents. The only way out is vegetative reproduction: by dividing the shrub and grafting. The latter method is especially good if you need a large number of barberry plants to arrange a hedge.

Cutting rules

  • the best survival rate of green cuttings of barberry, cut in June;
  • For grafting, this year's growth is chosen, the middle part of the shoot with 4 leaves and one interstitium, about 10 cm long and half a centimeter thick;
  • at the bottom, cut obliquely, at the top - horizontally;
  • after removing the lower leaves and cutting the upper 2 by half, the barberry stem is dipped into the root stimulating powder with the lower part;
  • rooting cuttings is better in the minitemplica, the ground is light, from a mixture of sand and peat with the addition of vermicult;
  • from above there should be a layer of sand, 4 cm thick, into it and land with a slope to the south and a depth of 1 cm;
  • food area for each cutting - 5x7 cm;
  • soil moisture is constant, and air - 85%, which is achieved by frequent spraying.
Tip! Artificial fog will increase the number of rooted barberry plants.

The first and sometimes the second wintering is at the place of rooting; in the garden, the young barberries of Rose Glow are resettled after 1-2 years.

By the time of the division, the Rose Glou barberry bush should already be 3 years old. The best time to share the procedure is spring, until the kidneys are awake. The excavated barberry plants are divided by sharp shears into pieces, each of which must contain both roots and stems. The cut is treated with charcoal powder and planted delenki.

Diseases and pests

Most often, Rose Glow is affected by diseases that have a fungal nature, they are especially violent in the summer with heavy rains.

  1. Mealy dew is a well-marked bloom on the leaves of white barberry. Removal of the affected parts of the plant and dusting with colloidal sulfur will help.

    Tip! If the weather is wet for a long time, it is better not to wait for the development of the disease, but to carry out preventive spraying of barberry bushes with copper-containing fungicide.

  2. Rust - orange spots on the leaves. The measures of struggle are the same.
  3. Spotting - spots on the leaves, which soon wither. The treatment of barberry with copper oxychloride solution will help.
  4. Drying of the stems and necrosis of the bark. Both diseases have a similar nature - a fungal, manifestation - drying of large trunks or twigs and control measures: they cut off the damaged parts by capturing up to 15 cm of healthy tissue and treat the barberry plants with a solution of blue vitriol.
  5. Bacteriosis - dark spots that can appear on any part of the plant. We'll have to remove the diseased tissue, and if the lesion is at the base of the trunk, then the whole bush.

Among the Rose Glow pests, the most common are larvae-caterpillars of the barberry sawfly and the moth flower. For their destruction use 2% solution of karbofos. A soap solution effectively cope with barberry aphids. Bioinsecticides, for example, Fitoverm, are also suitable.

Barberry Rose Glow will decorate the garden plot, give it a new, fresh paint, without requiring special care.
