The next variety, adapted to the conditions of the north-west. We can say that this is a new selection. The plant gives a bountiful harvest, and in a relatively short time. The fruits have excellent taste and are stored for a long time.

There are many varieties that are zoned for the northern regions. Although the southern regions have a slightly wider choice of varieties, those who live in a cool climate can also grow carrots.

How to get an early harvest

For early harvest, many gardeners sow carrot seeds before winter. This should be done before the arrival of sustainable frosts, as well as select varieties intended for such cultivation. The bed for winter sowing is distinguished on a plot with a slight slope to the south or southwest. Due to the correct location of the soil in the spring thawed more likely, and the water will not stagnate on the surface.

Important! When excavating a bed for planting carrots, it is worth getting rid of the roots of perennial weeds (for example, wheat grass).

The following are the main points of soil preparation:

  • they start preparing the bed one month before the planned sowing, until the ground is frozen and it can be well digged up;
  • for carrots, the area where cabbages, zucchini, cucumbers, onions (any), pumpkin, potatoes were planted this season;
  • it is possible to plant carrots again on the same plot not earlier than in 4 years;
  • the soil in the garden bed is preliminarily freed from the remaining greenery and dug to a depth of 35-40 cm;
  • the soil is fed with fertilizer.

As a fertilizer for planting carrots, humus is used (1-2 buckets per square meter of soil). You can also use superphosphate (half a tablespoon per meter) or potassium salt (2 teaspoons).

In addition to mineral additives, you can apply the usual ash. During the preparation of the soil per square meter, one cup is sufficient. If the ground is heavy, add rotten sawdust.

How to prepare a bed for carrots

After digging and fertilizing the soil must be loosened. The beds form furrows about 5 cm deep. The gap between them is 20-25 cm. When the time to sow the seeds of carrots comes, the grooves will settle and their depth will reach 2-3 cm.

Important! After preparing the beds, it is covered with a thick film so that the grooves are not washed away by rain.

It is necessary to sprinkle the soil in advance to fill up the grooves when sowing carrot seeds. Until that time, it will be stored in a warm room.

Sowing is done in frozen ground when low temperatures are established. This usually occurs in mid-November. To ensure a sufficient number of seedlings, the seed rate per bed is increased by a quarter. When sowing is completed, the grooves fall asleep with previously prepared earth. On top of it is necessary to put a thin layer of peat or humus. When it snows, the bed additionally fall asleep.

Work in the early spring garden

When spring begins, it's time to return to work on the garden. So that the snow came off faster and the earth began to warm up, snow was immediately removed. Sometimes peat is scattered on the surface. Dark dressing heats up faster in the sun, so the remnants of snow go down from the garden faster.

There is another opportunity to accelerate the ripening of carrots. Over a bed establish shelter. For this:

  • fixed along the entire length of the bed of the arc;
  • non-woven material (film, spunbond, etc.) is laid over the arcs.
Important! Carrots are resistant to low temperatures, it can withstand temperatures down to -3 degrees.

The list of works at emergence

For carrot beds need to take good care. The gardener needs:

  • loosen the soil;
  • free the bed from weeds;
  • thin out sprouts;
  • timely fertilize.

Loosening is important because after this procedure the flow of oxygen to the sprouts improves. When the soil dries, you need to plow and the gaps between the rows.

A couple of weeks after sprouting out, weeds should be removed. At the same time, carrot thinned. Between plants should remain a distance of 2 cm. After two and a half weeks, the thinning is repeated. Now you need to leave 5 cm between shoots.

If necessary, the soil can be fertilized again. To do this, along the grooves enclose nitrogen fertilizer in the proportion of half a table spoon per square meter. When winter planting fresh crop of carrots will be available in the first half of June.

Important! If the carrot is sown in winter, it is not left for storage for the winter.

Harvest details

Crop harvested at different times. They are determined by the characteristics of the variety. First, the carrot is planted in winter. When thinning is carried out a second time, young vegetables of any kind are already fit for human consumption. The established standard for ripe carrots is 3 cm diameter.

Solid cleaning is carried out before the frost. Usually this time falls on the end of September. The method of harvesting carrots is also determined by the characteristics of the variety. If the roots are short or medium length, they are pulled from the tops. For long carrots, you will need a spade or pitchfork. Next, the crop is sorted. For long-term storage, leave only intact fruits of the respective varieties.

Carrots are one of the cold-resistant crops. However, when planting in the north-western climate, it is recommended to give preference to zoned varieties. Many gardeners practiced winter planting of a number of varieties. It allows you to get a harvest of carrots in the first days of June.
