Of all the vegetables that our gardeners and gardeners planted in their summer cottages, eggplant is the most delicate and capricious. It is because of problems with growing seedlings, many gardeners do not dare to plant it on their beds. And it is especially insulting when seemingly healthy seedlings suddenly drop their leaves and go limp. What to do in this case and how to prevent such phenomena, we will describe below.
The reasons why eggplant seedlings fall
Most often, the answer to the question: “Why does eggplant seedlings fall?” Lies in the wrong care of young plants. Eggplant seedlings are so tender that even a short-term change in the conditions of their cultivation can have a significant negative impact on plants. There are the following reasons why eggplant seedlings may wilt:
- watering change;
- low light;
- sharp temperature drop;
- the occurrence of various diseases;
- pest damage;
- putrid root damage.
Let's walk through each item in more detail.
Eggplant seedlings instantly react to even the smallest change in the mode of irrigation, let alone talk about a long overabundance of moisture or its lack. But if you choose between the two extremes, it is much easier to reanimate plants that lacked moisture. After all, with a strong bay of young eggplant plants, the tender root system can not withstand and rot.
In addition, the water temperature for irrigation is important. Eggplants, like other members of the Bean family, have a very sensitive root system. Therefore, watering with cold water can adversely affect the delicate roots and lead to the fall of the seedlings.
In order to avoid this, it is necessary to follow simple rules for watering eggplant seedlings:
- Watering the sprung shoots of eggplant is allowed only when the topsoil dries. In this case, it is necessary to abandon the usual watering of watering can, but only wet the ground with a spray bottle;
- A week after the germination of eggplant seeds, young seedlings can already be watered in the usual way. Regular watering should be no more than once every 5 days;
- For irrigation, only separated water at room temperature is taken.
Most often, the lack of light is experienced by eggplant seedlings, which are grown in apartment conditions, where the illumination is rather low. And for the normal growth of eggplant seedlings need light for 12-14 hours. At the same time, the older the seedlings, the more it needs light. It is for this reason that seemingly healthy seedlings can suddenly begin to lower their leaves or fall.Important! A long stay in the sun can also have a disastrous effect on eggplant plants.
Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause burns on the leaves and wilting of the plant itself.
In order to prevent the fall of the seedlings or to save the already affected plants, fluorescent lamps are used. They are sold everywhere, but the very peak of sales occurs at the end of winter - early spring, when gardeners begin to prepare seedlings. To pick up the lamp is not only the size of the wallet, but also the size of the installation site.
Installing the lamp is at a height of 15-30 centimeters from the plants of eggplant. Include them is only in the morning and evening hours. The duration of the lamp depends on the length of the day in a particular area.
Sharp temperature drop
A sharp change in temperature has nothing to do with the hardening of seedlings. Measures for hardening seedlings can only have a positive effect on young eggplant plants. But frequent sudden changes in temperature, on the contrary, cause the fall of plants. It would seem, and in fact, and in another case, the temperature changes, why is such a different effect? The fact is that a sharp temperature drop is short-lived. Eggplant seedlings do not have time to adapt to such changes in temperature and reacts to them by lowering their leaves or falling.
A sharp temperature drop occurs both as a result of drafts, and with a brief opening of a window or window leaf. To help fallen seedlings, may stabilize the temperature. If after a few days the seedlings do not rise, then you can try to water the plants with a growth stimulator.Important! When using drugs that stimulate plant growth, you must strictly follow the instructions.
Exceeding the recommended dosages can negatively affect the root system of already weakened eggplant plants.
The emergence of various diseases
Seedlings are young and unprotected plants, with weak, only emerging immunity. Even if the adult plants of the selected variety have resistance, say, to different types of spotting, the seedlings are not yet immune to them. Eggplant seedlings can affect both bacterial and fungal diseases:
- black spot;
- powdery mildew, both false and real;
The first two diseases are determined by external signs. In the case of black spot, these are black, dark brown spots on the foliage.
But powdery mildew first dries the leaves of the seedlings, and then causes the entire plant to wilt.
Black spot treatment is quite difficult. Fungicides are the most commonly used, reducing irrigation and reducing moisture can also help. Mildew is treated with Fitostorin or Topaz.
Both of these diseases appear quite rarely, which is not the case with the black leg. If the conditions of care did not change, and the plants suddenly fell, then the first thing to check is the base of the stem of the plant. If on its surface there are darkening with small nodules in the middle, then this is a treacherous black leg.
Black leg is a fungal disease, which is almost impossible to cure. The simplest thing you can do is remove the infected eggplant. You can try to treat it with "Phytosporin", sprinkle with ashes or crushed eggshell, but, most likely, everything will be in vain.
To avoid the black leg can thoroughly presowing cultivation of the earth. To do this, use boiling water or a solution of potassium permanganate.Tip! According to experienced gardeners, the most effective way to disinfect the earth is roasting it in the oven.
Falling of young shoots of eggplants can be caused by harmful insects. Most often, this culture is attacked:
- spider mite.
To combat them, you can use chemicals. In those cases when you do not want to spray young weakened plants of eggplants with incomprehensible chemistry, you can use the good old potassium permanganate. For this fit a light pale pink solution. They can also shed the ground to destroy the insect larvae.
Putrid lesions of the root system
All putrefactive damage to the root system of eggplant plants occurs under the influence of fungal spores, which look like a white or pinkish bloom. At the same time young shoots of eggplants begin to fall only in the case when the fungus struck almost the entire root system. At the initial stages, root rot can be determined from the bottom sheets: they turn yellow, then turn brown and dry.
Root rot on eggplant seedlings is easier to prevent than to cure. When the plants fell, to save them will not succeed. To prevent the putrefying of the root system will help the correct choice of soil and the optimal mode of irrigation. As the soil for eggplant seedlings definitely should not use the land with an acidic pH-level. Choose a neutral or alkaline earth.
Also, a favorable environment for the fungus is created by excessive fertilization with nitrogen-containing fertilizers and organic matter.
As you know, the best weapon in the fight is prevention. Therefore, in order for eggplant seedlings to grow well and not cause problems to the gardener, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the video about the rules for caring for plants of this crop:
