Seedlings purple tomato

Probably, tomatoes are those vegetables, the disappearance of which from our diet, we simply can not imagine. In the summer we eat them fresh, fry, boil, simmer when cooking various dishes, make preparations for the winter. One of the most delicious and healthy juices is tomato. Tomatoes contain vitamins, biologically active substances, they are shown in the diet for weight loss and for depression. If there are no contraindications, they are advised to include in the diet of people of very old age. In addition, they can grow on any site in almost any climatic zone - the blessing of varieties and hybrids is apparently invisible. Today we will answer the question that is asked very often: “Why is tomato seedlings purple?”.

What you need for the successful cultivation of tomatoes

Let's first find out what tomatoes love and do not like, because their successful cultivation depends on how well we take care of them. After all, the homeland of tomatoes is not only that another continent, a completely different climatic zone, they are used to a hot and dry climate. In our conditions, tomatoes grow exclusively due to the efforts of breeders and our efforts.

So, tomatoes prefer:

  • Moderately fertile water- and air-permeable soil with a slightly acid or neutral reaction;
  • Bright sun;
  • Ventilation;
  • Moderate uniform watering;
  • Dry air;
  • Heat;
  • Increased doses of phosphorus.

Tomatoes react negatively to the following:

  • Heavy loam and acidic soil;
  • Fresh manure;
  • Thickened landing;
  • Air stasis (poor airing);
  • Wet air;
  • Excess nitrogen;
  • Temperatures above 36 degrees;
  • Uneven watering and waterlogging;
  • Excess mineral fertilizers;
  • Prolonged cooling below 14 degrees.

The reasons why tomato seedlings can become purple

Sometimes tomato seedlings are colored purple, and different varieties growing in the same box can be colored differently. Tomatoes can become purple completely, only the stem can stain, but most often the underside of the leaves is blue.

In fact, the blue color of the leaves of tomatoes indicates a lack of phosphorus. But before giving additional feeding let's consider in more detail the causes of phosphorus starvation. After all, tomatoes do not like an excess of mineral fertilizers, as already noted above. A seedling is not even a full-fledged plant, it is very vulnerable to any mistake.

Comment! As you know, phosphorus is no longer absorbed at temperatures below 15 degrees.

If you put a tomato thermometer next to the seedlings, and it shows a higher temperature, this is no reason to calm down. Thermometer shows air temperature, soil temperature below. If a box with tomato seedlings is located close to the cold window glass, the problem may be exactly that.

How to help if tomato seedlings turn purple

If the leaves of tomatoes, besides being stained purple, are also raised upwards, then the reason is precisely in a low temperature. It is possible to install foil between the window sill and the box with the tomato seedlings - it will protect from the cold and provide additional lighting. If this does not help, move the box with the tomato seedlings to a warmer place and light up to 12 hours a day with a fluorescent lamp or phytolamps. After some time, tomato seedlings will acquire the usual green color without any additional fertilizing.

But if the temperature of the content of tomatoes is obviously above 15 degrees, then the matter is really a lack of phosphorus. Spraying of superphosphate drawing over the sheet can help quickly and effectively. To do this, pour a spoonful of superphosphate cup (150 g) of boiling water, let it brew for 8-10 hours. After that, dissolve in 2 liters of water, spray and water the seedlings.

Oddly enough, the backlight can be another reason for poor phosphorus absorption.

A warning! Do not light tomatoes at night.

In the afternoon, even in cloudy weather, a plant standing by the window receives a certain dose of ultraviolet radiation. At night, you can highlight only those tomatoes that receive only artificial lighting, and strictly for 12 hours, and not around the clock.

Any plant should have a rest period. It is in the dark that tomatoes absorb and process the nutrients accumulated during the day.

How to make tomato seedlings more resistant

As you know, strong plants are more resistant to negative factors. It is very important for tomato seedlings.

Even at the stage of preparing seeds of tomatoes for planting, they should be well soaked in a solution of epin. Epin is a highly effective bioregulator and stimulant that helps the plant to reliably survive the factors causing stress, including hypothermia.

It is very good to water tomato seedlings not with water, but with a weak solution of humate. For some reason, manufacturers rarely write how to properly dissolve it. It is done this way: put a teaspoon of humate in a metal saucepan or mug, pour boiling water over it. Shake the resulting black foaming liquid and add 2 liters of cold water. When watering tomato seedlings need a weak solution - 100 g of the solution mixed with 1 liter of water. The solution can be stored indefinitely.
